I planted a knee-high nursery start in the damp back corner by the fence line and barely thought about it again. Three seasons on, the clump stood taller than me. You can always be surprised on the high side. Rich soil and steady moisture push your plant toward the tall end, while a dry, lean spot keeps it shorter and more compact.
Getting the lovage spacing right gives the clump room to fill out without crowding. Set your plants 24 to 36 inches (60 to 90 centimeters) apart. That lets each crown reach its full width over a couple of years. Put your lovage at the back of the bed as well. A stalk this tall throws a long shadow, and a front-row spot would shade out your smaller herbs and greens by midsummer. Tuck your shorter crops where the shadow lands in the afternoon. You will get the best of both, with the lovage in full sun and the lettuce sheltered from the worst heat.
Lovage is a long-lived perennial, so pick your spot once and leave it for good. The crown does not move well once it settles in. It returns larger each year as the roots reach deeper into the soil. Plan around the full lovage plant height from the start and leave clear room overhead for the 6 to 8 foot flower stalks. Give it a foot or two on each side for the spreading base too. Keep it clear of fences, low eaves, and power lines that the seed heads could reach.
