Overview
The almond's a deciduous tree in the rose family, basically a close cousin of the peach and apricot, and it's grown for the seed inside its stone rather than for any juicy fruit. It came out of western Asia and the eastern Mediterranean, and it's always been right at home in dry, sunny spots. And that thing you crack open and snack on? It's the kernel of a drupe, not a true nut at all.

Picked nuts that are tunneled and full of webbing and frass
That's the navel orangeworm, and it's about the nastiest thing an almond grower runs into. The larvae sneak into the nuts right as the hulls open, and where do they come from? Mostly the old mummy nuts that stuck around from last year. So clear those mummies out over winter, then spray at hull split and once more 2 to 3 weeks later if the bugs are really pushing.

Flowers going brown and falling right after a cold snap
Here's the tricky part: almonds flower way earlier than most fruit trees, so a late freeze catches the blooms wide open and kills the pistils, which go brown or black inside. Lose the bloom and you lose most of the crop. On the bad nights you can run wind machines or irrigation, plant somewhere the cold air rolls off downhill, and on frosty ground go with later-blooming varieties.

The fix is to time a fungicide to the flowers, around pink bud and full bloom, and then snip off whatever blighted spurs and mummies you come across.

Toxicity
You'll want to be genuinely careful with this tree around animals. The sweet almonds people eat are fine, but keep livestock, horses, and pets clear of the foliage and prunings.

Cats Mild

The sweet almonds off the shelf carry just a trace of cyanide and are totally fine to eat. Bitter almonds are the odd one out, with enough amygdalin to be genuinely poisonous raw, which is exactly why you won't find them sold for raw snacking.
