How do I fix soil that is too acidic?

A bed where lettuce sulks and brassicas stall is often too acidic, not underfed. To fix acidic soil, you add garden lime to cancel the extra acid and pull the pH up toward 6.5. That is the range where most vegetables feed best. More fertilizer will not help you here. Acidic ground locks up the nutrients your plants need. So you have to raise soil pH first, before anything else you do in that bed will pay off.

Garden lime is calcium carbonate. It is a fine ground rock that reacts with the acid in your soil and neutralizes it. As that reaction works through the ground, the pH climbs. Nutrients that were locked away open back up for your roots to take in. The catch is that not every soil responds at the same speed, and that part trips up a lot of gardeners.

Sandy soils shift fast. They hold little acid to begin with, so a small dose of lime moves the number quickly. Clay soils and soils high in organic matter fight the change much harder. UNH Extension says this is because they hold on to their acid more tightly. The term for that grip is buffering capacity. A heavy clay bed can need two to three times more lime than a sandy bed to make the same pH jump. The right dose depends on your own dirt, not the chart on the bag.

That is why a soil test comes first every time. A test tells you two things you cannot eyeball. It gives your starting pH, and it gives a lime rate matched to your soil type. Skip the test and you are guessing. Guessing is how beds end up too high or barely changed after all that work. A basic lab test through your local extension office is cheap and quick.

When you fix acidic soil, working the lime in matters as much as the rate. Lime moves through soil at a snail's pace on its own. If you leave it sitting on top, only the surface inch will change for a long time. Mix it into the top 6 inches so it can reach where the roots actually live. A garden fork or a tiller both do the job fine.

Go slow with how much you add at once. Raising pH a bit at a time lets you check your progress and stop at the right spot. Dump on a huge dose hoping for a fast fix and you can overshoot past 7.0. Soil that is too alkaline causes its own nutrient lockups. You can always add more lime next season. Pulling pH back down, though, is slow and messy.

One big warning before you treat the whole yard. Some plants want acidic ground on purpose. Blueberries, azaleas, and rhododendrons all need a low pH to stay healthy. Never lime the soil around them unless a test for that exact spot calls for it. A careless garden lime application near their roots can stunt the plant or turn the leaves yellow. Lime only the beds that test too acidic. Leave the acid lovers alone, and retest your veggie beds every couple of years to hold the range your crops want.
