The only sure way to tell if your soil is alkaline or acidic is to test soil pH with a real measurement. You can guess from the plants that thrive in your beds, but the soil under your feet will surprise you. A number on a scale settles the question, and that number is easy to get from three different methods you can run at home or send to a lab.
My back corner came back at pH 4.9, far more acidic than I expected for a Pacific Northwest yard. The blueberries there had been thriving, but I still figured the soil sat closer to neutral. The moss creeping over the path and the deep blue hydrangeas had been telling me the truth the whole time. Those clues only made sense once the lab put a hard number on the dirt.
Here is what the number means. Any reading below 7.0 is acidic. A reading of exactly 7.0 is neutral. A higher reading means the soil is alkaline. The scale runs from 0 to 14, and it is logarithmic. So each whole point is a tenfold change in acidity. A soil at pH 5.0 is ten times more acidic than one at pH 6.0. It is a hundred times more acidic than soil at pH 7.0. Small shifts on paper mean big shifts in the ground.
You have three main ways to measure soil acidity, and they trade cost for accuracy. Pick the one that fits how much the answer matters to your plants.
Home Color Test
- Cost: Runs about $10 to $20 for a kit with enough capsules for a dozen or more readings.
- How it works: You mix soil with water and a powder, then match the color to a chart for a rough pH range.
- Best for: A quick, cheap first look when you just want to know acidic versus alkaline.
Digital pH Meter
- Cost: Sits around $15 to $40 for a probe you push straight into damp soil.
- How it works: The probe reads the soil and shows a number on a dial or screen within a minute.
- Best for: Repeat checks across many beds, though cheap meters drift and need clean, moist soil to read true.
Lab Test Through Extension
- Cost: Often $15 to $25 per sample mailed to your local university extension office.
- How it works: A lab measures exact pH and usually reports nutrients and lime needs too.
- Best for: The accurate answer you want before spending money on amendments.
Whichever method you use, take samples from several spots in the same bed, not one scoop. Dig down about six inches, pull from four or five places, and mix them in a clean bucket. Soil pH can swing within a few feet, so one sample can fool you. Test each distinct area on its own, since a vegetable patch and a shrub border rarely match.
Plan to test soil pH again about every three years, which is the schedule UNH Extension suggests for home gardens. pH drifts over time as rain, fertilizer, and old plant matter break down in the soil. A reading from five years ago no longer reflects what your roots sit in now.
Reach for a cheap soil test kit when you want a fast yes or no on acidity. But before you spend real money on lime or sulfur, get a lab test first. Dumping amendments on a guess can push your soil the wrong way and lock up nutrients your plants need. A $20 lab test costs less than a season of stunted growth, and it tells you exactly how far you have to move the needle.
