The best fertilizer for acid-loving plants is an ammonium-based feed. Look for a bag that names azaleas or blueberries on it. These blends feed your plants. They also hold the low soil pH these plants need. A plain lawn or garden feed does neither job well. So reach for a true acid plant food instead.
The new leaves on my Bloom-A-Thon azalea by the front path turned a pale, washed-out green one early summer. The veins stayed dark while the rest of each young leaf faded to a sickly yellow cast. I had been giving it the same lawn feed I used on the grass. After two feedings with a product made for acid-loving plants, the next flush of leaves came in a deep, even green.
That color swing comes down to how the fertilizer treats your soil. Plants like azaleas, blueberries, camellias, and hollies want a pH near 4.5 to 5.5. That is more acidic than most lawns and vegetable beds prefer. Standard fertilizers can nudge the soil the wrong way and lock up nutrients the roots cannot reach. A blend built for these plants does the opposite. It keeps the ground sour enough for healthy growth.
Ammonium-based nitrogen is the part that does the heavy lifting. As soil bacteria process ammonium, they release acid that lowers the pH over time. That mild acidifying effect helps your soil stay in the range these plants love. Nitrate-based fertilizers, the kind in many all-purpose blends, do not give you that same push toward acidity.

Named For The Right Plants

If you spot those yellow leaves with dark green veins, you are likely seeing iron chlorosis. High pH ties up iron so roots cannot take it in. A dose of iron sulfate or chelated iron turns those leaves green again within a couple of weeks. Pair it with your feeding rather than using it in place of the fertilizer.
Always feed at the rate printed on the bag and water it in well. More is not better here. Too much fertilizer burns the shallow roots these plants grow near the surface. Spread the feed out to the edge of the leaf canopy, where the active feeder roots sit. And never add lime near acid-loving plants. Lime raises pH, the exact opposite of what your azaleas and blueberries need.
Timing matters as much as the product. University of Missouri Extension says not to feed these plants after August 1. A late feeding pushes soft new growth. That growth cannot harden off before the cold weather hits. For a slow-release pick, work a granular ammonium sulfate fertilizer into the soil in early spring. One spring feeding carries most plants through the main growing months.
