Want an oak that's easy and quick to get going? Pin oak's your tree, and that's exactly why it ends up shading so many lawns and streets across the eastern states. It's part of the red oak group and grows 50 to 70 feet (15 to 21 m) tall, with a straight central trunk and a broad pyramid of branches. Here's the fun part: the lower limbs sweep down toward the ground, the middle ones reach straight out, and the upper ones point at the sky, so you get this neat layered look that still shows even in winter.

What really sells people on it is the fall show. The deeply cut leaves turn a rich red to bronze and hang on well into the cold, and young trees will often keep their dead leaves all winter, a habit called marcescence. And because it's native to wet bottomlands, it doesn't mind soggy ground or even a brief flood once it's settled in, so it's a solid pick for a low, damp corner of the yard.

The one thing you can't skip is the soil. Pin oak wants acidic ground, and it'll go sickly and yellow on alkaline sites, so check your pH before you start digging. Give it the right soil, full sun, and enough room for that wide crown, and it grows fast and barely asks for anything after that.

Severe

Leaf edges browning and scorched, worse with every year

If the browning starts right at the leaf edges, sits behind a little yellow band, and comes back worse every summer, you're probably looking at bacterial leaf scorch from Xylella fastidiosa. Here's the tough part: there's no cure once it's in, so the job becomes keeping the tree comfortable with steady water and mulch and cutting out the limbs that are clearly on their way out. Varieties

Most pin oaks you'll find are just the straight species, but there are a couple of named forms for spots where the spreading, drooping habit causes problems.

Green Pillar ('Pringreen')

It's a slim, columnar form that tucks into tight spots and street-side beds where a full crown just wouldn't have the room.

It was bred to hold its lower branches up instead of letting them droop the way the plain species usually does.

Myth

Pin oak is called that because its persistent lower branches look just like pins.

Reality

The name probably comes instead from all those small, slender dead twigs and stubs that get left behind when the shaded lower branches die off. Sure, the tree does keep its drooping lower limbs, and young ones hang onto dead leaves all winter, a trait called marcescence. The pins are the spur-like dead twigs, not the living branches.

Myth

Yellow leaves on a pin oak? That means it's hungry for fertilizer or thirsty for water.

Reality

Leaves going pale between green veins? That's almost always iron chlorosis, caused by high soil pH that keeps iron away from the roots. Piling on general fertilizer or extra water won't touch it. The real fix is lowering the pH or adding iron, not feeding the tree harder.
